Joburg Zoo celebrates our giant land animal, the rhino ahead of World Rhino Day

SAXONWOLD – World Rhino Day is celebrated on September 22.

The Joburg Zoo embraced our beloved rhino ahead of World Rhino Day.

The team at the zoo invited an orphanage from Kibler Park to a talk on the importance of rhino conservation on September 17. World Rhino Day is celebrated on September 22, this is a day of awareness for all five rhino species and the work being done to save them.

Since 2011, World Rhino Day has been celebrated internationally on September 22 – this year is the 10th anniversary! On World Rhino Day, the International Rhino Foundation celebrates rhinos and all those around the world who care about them.

Nathi Mvula, a senior environmental specialist from Joburg Zoo, spoke about how important it is we cherish and respect this wild animal. The Zoo has only one of the five rhino species, the white rhino. These animals may weigh up to 2.3 tonnes and can reach speeds of up to 45 km/h.

According to the International Rhino Foundation, “A country-wide lockdown in South Africa in response to the Covid-19 pandemic has brought about an unexpected benefit to rhinos and other wildlife – a decrease in poaching incidents. However, as restrictions loosen and the economy continues to worsen, concerns are rising that more could turn to poaching as jobs are lost.”
