How to get speed bumps installed

BLAIRGOWRIE – There are two ways to go about getting speed bumps installed. One is expensive but the other can take time.

In light of the matter of reckless drivers in Blairgowrie, and Blairgowrie Primary School asking drivers to slow down, Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck has explained how a person or organisation can apply for traffic calming measures.

Any applicant wishing to apply for traffic calming (speed humps), must submit an application via one of the following two processes:

  • A petition registered with the petitions committee at the speaker’s office. This is City-funded, but will take time as there are many requests. One can use a mix of online and physical forms. Truluck said he could provide the wording if applicants wished.

  • Alternately, any self-funded application can be submitted directly to JRA, with the following supporting documentation;
    – Traffic safety audit (feasibility study)
    – Signed community and/or business support – ward councillor’s support (official letter).
    – A letter of support from the City of Johannesburg’s Regional Director’s Office.
    – A supporting letter and/or enforcement statistics from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department.

These documents must be submitted to the JRA traffic engineering division. All application are assessed in accordance with the City’s Traffic Calming Policy.
