“Every child is an artist”

NORWOOD – Three of the home’s children have been selected to showcase their works at the Allegretto Eisteddfod this year.

The Johannesburg Children’s Home held its Together Apart art exhibition to celebrate young artists from the home.

The art exhibition was held on 28 August at Thrift Up in Soho Square, Norwood.

The Johannesburg Children’s Home provides high-quality care for 64 children who have been found in need of care by the Children’s Court. The home provides for their physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, educational and social needs. Head of operations and PR at the home Fiona Duke said, “We believe that childcare is not just the provision of food and shelter, but also includes the provision of a special place for a child to be, a home in which he/she can take pride and feel surrounded by love and warmth.”

Art lessons are offered to the children at the home on Friday afternoons by art teacher, Lea Kirsten. “The children enjoy creativity and freedom of expression through their participation in art classes. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the cancellation of big events on Mandela Day at the children’s home, we decided to showcase our children’s art publicly. It was a wonderful opportunity for the community to admire and purchase the artwork in the open air, as well as visit our shop, Thrift Up at the same time,” Duke added.

Thrift Up appeals mainly to thrifters and collectors of pre-used items, such as clothing, household items and books. The income generated from the shop as well as the proceeds of the art exhibition directly benefits the 64 children at the Johannesburg Children’s Home.

Three of the home’s children have been selected to showcase their works at the Allegretto Eisteddfod this year. “We currently have 20 children in the art programme ranging from the ages of six to 17 years.”

Thirteen artworks and many items in the shop were sold on the day. “We thank the community of Norwood for their support. A limited number of art pieces will continue to be on display at Thrift Up,” concluded Duke.
