BreadCrumbs promotes action by providing free vaccine bus to vaccine site

CRAIGHALL PARK – Organisers believe their initiative will nudge intent and help drive vaccine adoption by offering access to vaccine sites.

BreadCrumbs, a behavioural linguistics company based in Craighall Park, is offering a free shuttle to and from Charlotte Maxeke hospital to help residents get vaccinated.

With the assistance of Craigpark Residents Association (CRA), organisers call residents above the age of 50 to help get their vaccines. The buses leave at 12:30 on 14 Buckingham Avenue in Craighall Park every Wednesday.

Behavioural linguist and founder of BreadCrumbs Leigh Crymble said they specialise in nudging positive action for people and broader societal good. “Without question, that means getting vaccinated when it’s your turn. We believe in the true power of behavioural communication in persuading people to get vaccinated,” said Cymble.

She said persuasion was simply not enough if people cannot access the vaccine site sites. “People can have the best intentions in the world, but if there’s this type of friction point or barrier, intent is lost.”

Vaccinations cannot be a luxury where people without the means to get to a vaccine site are disadvantaged. This is one of the reasons that influenced BreadCrumbs to dedicate their resources towards helping solve the problem.

The company offers free transport to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for anyone living in surrounding areas to get both to and from the hospital – at no charge. “We started small, with only a handful of people joining us and have now expanded to four vaccine buses – with all the appropriate distancing and safety precautions – every week,” she said.

A post by BreadCrumbs on Facebook caught the eye of the CRA who made the quick decision to contribute to the transport costs. CRA has since committed R15 000 to hire multiple shuttles each week to ensure that more people get free access directly from their home or their places of work to Charlotte Maxeke.

Crymble accompanies who she calls her ‘vaccination guests’ to support them throughout the process.
