Positive start to debating year at Parktown Girls

PARKVIEW – Debating captain Ammaarah Cachalia said, “With such a steady start to 2021, we look forward to seeing the debating community grow from strength to strength throughout the rest of the year."

Debating captain at Parktown High School for Girls Ammaarah Cachalia is proud of the school’s successful start to the year for the junior and senior debating teams.

Ammaarah said, “The first two terms of debating have been a beautiful success at Parktown. We started the year off with many new Grade 8s, who were eager to learn about debating from our brilliant coaches.”

Parktown entered two senior and two junior teams into the South African Council for English Education (Sacee) debating tournaments.

Ammaarah explained that the junior blue team (consisting of Laura Helling, Sabiha Kücük, Minnah Elgoni, Rachel Zwane and Keketso Smith) placed 21st at the competition, progressing to the plate octo-finals. The junior white team (consisting of Zara Mohamed, Alayna Badat, Luyanda Phakathi, Lisakhanya Mtati and Sinoyolo Sigwela) competed in the eight preliminary rounds, making the school proud with their ability to learn and grow in such a short amount of time.

In the senior division, the senior blue team (consisting of Christina Vaudran, Zoë Chetty, Zahra Sader, Sara Oats and Ammaarah Cachalia) and senior white team (consisting of Tiger-Anne Cupido, Aneesa Aden, Micaela Smith, Aaliyah Cassim and Gabriella Hoskins) also competed in eight preliminary rounds, breaking 16th and 13th position respectively and making it into the octo-finals. The senior blue team will further compete in the semi-finals on July 31.

“With such a steady start to 2021, we look forward to seeing the debating community grow from strength to strength throughout the rest of the year,” concluded Ammaarah.
