Are enough efforts being made to get dagga off the streets of Rosebank?

ROSEBANK – Rosebank community members are uneasy about dagga sales in the area.

Rosebank community members raise concern to the RMD regarding the growing dagga dealings in the precinct.
The Rosebank Management District RMD has received multiple questions from residents regarding the sale of dagga in the Rosebank precinct.

Some of the questions included in the dealing of dagga is not a criminal offence? How can the security and police teams possibly manage crime if they cannot get rid of dealers who stand in the same place every single day?

To help bring some relief to stakeholders and community members, Vincent Rudman, key account manager for Excellerate Services, went to one of the dealer-populated areas with hopes to disrupt the dagga sales.

“I was there on Friday, 28 May to hassle the dealers. I took a few photos of buyers, including a lady in a blue car with her toddler in the back seat. As soon as there was an interruption by us, the dealers literally walked one block up toward the back of the police station and continued to trade there,” he said.
“We try by all means to disrupt all these sales of dagga but without law enforcement support our hands are tied.”

Lerato Khiba, precinct manager of Excellerate Services told the Rosebank Killarney Gazette that she personally went to the station with Michael Makaringe, who is the operations manager, and addressed the concern with Station Commander Colonel Mashele and were told that the station will discuss the concerns and then provide feedback.

Keyes Avenue has been said to be one of the most problematic areas in the Rosebank Precinct with regards to dagga usage and sales.

The Gazette contacted the Rosebank Police Station to find out about the efforts that they are making to get the dagga dealers off the streets. According to the spokesperson, Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe, Keyes Avenue is a problematic area with regard to dagga dealings. He said that the police have had multiple operations alongside the Johannesburg Metro police, K9 units and security personnel to address the problem in the area.

He added that the Rosebank police have made multiple arrests of dagga- and nyaope-related cases.
