Offenders given their sentences

SYDENHAM – After arrests were made toward the end of last year, last month saw sentences being passed.

The Norwood Police Station confirmed that two individuals were convicted and sentenced for their crimes.

Spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha said the 32- and 39-year-old males were found guilty of housebreaking at residential premises and possession of a stolen car engine for which they were arrested and charged on 26 October 2020.

“The judgment was handed down on 22 April 2021 by the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court and each offender sentenced to three years’ each direct imprisonment. “We are thankful that justice has been served,” added Masotsha.

Recounting the events, the spokesperson said last year on 26 October, the offenders broke into a residential premise on 9th Avenue in Sydenham and stole the engine of a Nissan 1400 to the value of not less than R10 000 from the garage at the above-mentioned address.

He added, “They were arrested by security personnel and the police were called for a formal arrest of the suspects and again we thank all our loyal private security companies working together in the fight against crime for the love of our country.”

He said the Norwood station management applauded the investigation officer, Detective Constable Tlangelani Lennox Shipalana, who investigated the case and contributed to the ‘hefty’ sentence. The Station Commander Colonel Phetule Mahasha also congratulated the member for excellent work and said that this must serve as a warning to all criminals.

Masotsha concluded, “The long arm of the law will eventually catch up with them and they will go to jail for their crimes. The My SAPS app can also be used to send information to the police. All information will be handled with strict confidentiality.”
