Classic tales given a fresh twist at National Children’s Theatre

PARKTOWN – CEO of NCT Moira Katz says, “The educational aspect of the fables is a great opportunity for parents and teachers to chat with children about the transfer of lessons from page to stage to real life.”

The National Children’s Theatre (NCT) in Parktown is excited to bring Aesop’s Fables to their stage from 8 to 30 May.

The timeless fables are given a fresh and creative spin under the directorship of Weslee Lauders, taking audiences on a trip through some of the most-loved stories. These include The Fox and the Grapes (known for the original idiom ‘sour grapes’); The Tortoise and the Hare; The Boy who Cried Wolf; The Lion and the Mouse and The Ant and the Grasshopper.

The fables were originally handed down from person to person for both entertainment and as a means of teaching a moral or lesson.

Lauders explained that the stories are not only entertaining but serve to teach core moral values, where children can learn from them subliminally.

He said that the production is most suitable for children over the age of seven or eight as it relies on imagination. “It’s going to be quite imaginative and uses a lot of different theatrical elements to tell each story in a unique way,” said Lauders, adding that there are references which both children and adults will enjoy.

“You will always remain surprised and there is never a dull moment on stage.

“Not only do children need to be taught well and to be good human beings, but they should attend theatre to broaden their minds and expand their imagination.”

National Children’s Theatre CEO Moira Katz said, “The educational aspect of the fables is a great opportunity for parents and teachers to chat with children about the transfer of lessons from page to stage to real life.”

Lauders added, “This is a celebration of how fresh, bold and vibrant the classics remain today.”

Shows take place on selected days at 10.30am and 2.30pm. Tickets cost R120 per person and are available at www.quicket.co.za
