Norwood police arrest suspect wanted for house robberies

NORWOOD – During the search, police found the driver in possession of a black toy handgun, which was hidden under his T-shirt.

Norwood Crime Prevention Unit arrested a suspect wanted in connection with various business robberies in the Norwood policing precinct.

The spokesperson for the Norwood Police Station, Sergeant Eric Masotsha confirmed that on 6 April at about 8pm, Norwood Crime Prevention Unit was conducting patrols in the area along Louis Botha Avenue. The team spotted a suspicious silver Toyota Yaris with three occupants and no registration on the back of the vehicle.

“When police stopped the vehicle, two suspects jumped out of the car and ran away towards Orchards,” said Masotsha.

Police approached the vehicle in which only the driver remained, and they identified themselves to him and asked to search him and his vehicle.

During the search, police found the driver in possession of a black toy handgun which was hidden under his T-shirt.

When asked for an explanation for being in possession of the handgun and why his passengers ran away, the driver failed to give an answer.

Masotsha said street robberies were common in the area with firearms being pointed at victims before cell phones were snatched and the suspects jumping into a getaway vehicle.

Police requested that anyone who had been robbed of his or her cell phone on the street contact police to identify the suspect and see if the same vehicle was used.

Masotsha said police arrested the driver for possession of a dangerous weapon since the law of the country considered a toy gun to be a real firearm.

Norwood Station Commander Colonel Phetule Mahasha commended the unit led by Sergeant Samuel Khang, Sergeant Thamsanga Nyalungu and Sergeant Vusimuzi Vhangani.

After being profiled on arrival at the station, police found that the suspect had been involved in various business robberies in the Norwood policing precinct last year and earlier this year.

Masotsha said the suspect would appear in court in due course to answer to all charges brought against him.

He warned criminals still at large that their days were numbered and the heat was on.

Any criminal activities in the area should be reported on 071 675 6053/4/5 as the station’s landlines are down.
