Norwood police arrest two suspects on charges of assault under domestic violence

NORWOOD – Masotsha urges residents to report any kind of domestic violence to the nearest police station.

Norwood police have arrested two suspects on charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm under domestic violence.

A spokesperson for the Norwood Police Station Sergeant Eric Masotsha said on 9 April at about 4.25 pm, one male suspect was arrested in Sydenham after police were called to the scene.

“On their arrival, police found paramedics busy nursing a man who was badly assaulted by another tenant and was conscious but unable to talk and later taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention,” said Masotsha.

He added that the suspect had been pointed out by residents who were staying with him. He was arrested and taken to Norwood Police Station.

A second suspect had been detained for the same offence.

“It has been confirmed that one male is behind bars after badly assaulting and raping his partner in Norwood. The incident took place at 10pm on 3 April when the man allegedly woke up his wife alleging that she was under the influence of alcohol. According to the woman, she was not drinking as she was pregnant.

“The husband then started beating his wife until morning when he forced her to drink cider and had sexual intercourse without her consent.”

Masotsha said after the matter was reported to police, the man was arrested.

He urged residents to report any kind of domestic violence to the nearest police station and discouraged victims from returning to the police station later to cancel the charges.

He also warned family members to refrain from misleading victims into withdrawing their cases.

Both suspects will appear in court soon.
