Shoot-out in Melrose on Easter Monday under investigation

Police are investigating a case of attempted business robbery, which took place at Melrose Arch, and attempted murder following a shoot-out on Athol-Oaklands Road.

Police are investigating a case of attempted business robbery and attempted murder following an incident which took place at Melrose Arch on 5 April.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele, it is alleged that an unknown number of suspects driving two cars, an Audi Q7 and Ford Ranger, were in a shoot-out with security guards after they were intercepted before a business robbery.

Makhubele said that a man driving his car was shot and injured during the incident.

Nothing was taken from the shop, however.

Police call on anyone with information to contact 086 001 0111 or the nearest police station.

Managing director of Melrose Arch Mike Vermaak said, “Melrose Arch Precinct Management can confirm an attempted armed robbery took place at a jewellery store within the precinct on 5 April.”

“The jewellery store’s security system prevented the suspects from entering the store and they fled without taking anything.”

According to Vermaak, the suspects left Melrose Arch in two vehicles and were pursued by a private security company.

“The suspects shot at the security officers’ vehicle on Athol-Oaklands Road and unfortunately, a security officer and a passing motorist were wounded. The two men received medical attention on site and were transported to hospital, where they are both in a stable condition.”

Vermaak said that Melrose Arch Precinct Management continue to be in touch with the injured parties and receive regular updates on their progress.

Vermaak said that several arrests have been made so far and they are working closely with Saps.

“Melrose Arch Management would like to thank Saps, JMPD, the various security companies and Medi-Response, who assisted during this incident.”

“We would like to assure our tenants and customers that their safety is always of paramount importance,” concluded Vermaak.
