Greenside Phoenixes celebrated following a tough year

GREENSIDE – The school hosted a small celebration following the English Paper 3 exam on 9 December.


The Class of 2020 at Greenside High School was celebrated with a small farewell and awards event on 9 December following their English paper 3 exams.

After an appeal to the local community and past learners, the school managed to raise R15 000 to purchase food and party packs for learners.

Marketing manager Marcos Diez thanked the Gazette for our article Give the Greenside High matrics a small send-off [Week ending 4 December], which helped to garner support from community members.

Deputy principal Craig Strauss said, “A learner’s matric year is much-anticipated because of the matric jacket they receive, the valedictory service and matric dance. These matrics could not do these things so we wanted to do this small gesture that they can remember. This is something to say we haven’t forgotten about them.

“During this unprecedented year of hard work, we wanted our children to be happy and leave feeling valued.”

He added that each grade at the school was given a name. The Class of 2020 at Greenside High was known as the Phoenixes.

“We hope they will rise to the occasion again and we look forward to receiving their results next year.”

Matric learner Alexandria Pillay spoke to the Gazette about her experiences this year.

“It was really difficult to learn online at first since I’m a visual learner and work better in class. I am grateful for the resources afforded me at Greenside. The support from the school has been incredible,” said Alexandria.

A white blazer representing outstanding achievement in service, culture, sport and academics was awarded to matric learner Terique Carim at the event.

Reflecting on the year, Terique said, “It has been a unique and challenging year, but it has also been interesting to experience history in the making. This event is a fitting way to end the year and recognise the tough year it has been and celebrate the resilience of our matric class.”
