A new scam connected to hijackings as well as motor vehicle and trailer theft has been noted by the police.
Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha said police have encountered cases where the victim of the aforementioned crimes fell into the trap of people impersonating police officers.
“These impersonators would tell victims that their property had been recovered and that they should pay a fee to have the vehicle or stolen items transported or held in safekeeping before the victim would be able to collect it.
“At no stage will the police request payment for any services relating to the recovery of vehicles. Should you receive such a call from a person claiming to have recovered your vehicle or items, please contact your nearest police station to verify the information,” advised Masotsha.
He said police would verify the information at the station and inform you if your vehicle had been recovered. The relevant vehicle theft unit would inform people on the correct process to follow.
Masotsha advised members of the public not to pay any amount to anyone including legitimate police members for the recovery of their vehicle or items. “You better inform such a person that you are going to report him or her to the police.”
