Dunkeld Bowls Club is doing better than ever

"We have survived the storm and gained new members," said club president, Chad Joseph.

Dunkeld Bowls Club has come out of hard lockdown stronger than ever.

Building renovations that were still underway earlier in the year are finished now and more people have joined the club to play bowls.

“We have survived the storm and gained new members,” said club president, Chad Joseph.

“Bowling clubs struggled financially while we were all closed but we persevered through adversity. When we reopened our bowling, membership increased as people joined up.”

Furthermore, an extension to the clubhouse, an outside hut for the lawnmower and other equipment, and work on the terrace and restaurant have also been completed.

The club also plans to repaint the clubhouse roof and extend its second kitchen.

The restaurant, bar, clubhouse and terrace are busy, with members and visitors enjoying meals during the day and playing the odd game of bowls.

“We still adhere to the safety protocols prescribed by Johannesburg Bowls Association,” Joseph added.

“There are sanitisers around and people have to wear face masks when they enter [the premises]. All mats and jacks are sanitised daily as well as between games. People are also encouraged to keep social distancing on the greens.”

The bowls association has plans in place to start hosting big tournaments soon but until then, clubs have to host internal events and not invite members of other clubs.

“We will soon host internal competitions and will do a draw after our AGM on 17 October. It is an excellent time to learn the game and it is safe to play.”

Joseph teaches novices for free on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 9am and he encouraged community members to contact him if interested in joining.”
