Family Life Centre says they will rise to overcome the obstacles

The centre celebrated its 71st birthday on 29 September following six tough months of lockdown.

Parkwood-based Family Life Centre is confident that they will overcome the obstacles thrown at them and rebuild to continue their 71-year legacy.

The centre celebrated its 71st birthday on 29 September following six tough months of lockdown.

New director Jennifer Papers emphasised that despite the losses of Covid-19, the non-profit organisation will rise again.

“In the midst of the turmoil and confusion, we will stand together and overcome our obstacles with grace and vigour. The community needs us now more than ever,” said Papers.

Chair of the board and CEO of Rays of Hope Sihle Mooi addressed those present at the annual general meeting saying that increasingly, lockdown has impacted the mental health of community members.

“People are struggling to keep it together. People have suffered great uncertainty, grief and hardship. It’s about how we position ourselves to help,” said Mooi.

Papers said that the pandemic forced the NPO to let go of a number of employees due to financial constraints.

Counselling was moved online, with employees only returning to the office from 1 October.

Papers said that while both online and in-person services would be available going forward, they would be taking a number of steps to adapt to the ‘new normal’.

“Crime is on the rise, victims of gender-based violence have been trapped with their abusers for months and there is a lot of uncertainty, grief and unemployment.

“I have hope that we will get back on our feet and return to offer the services we are good at. Support from corporates is necessary to keep us going. Every little bit helps.

“Despite everything, South Africa is a resilient nation. We have overcome so much and we will overcome this. We want to help rebuild healthy individuals and families that will make up a healthy society and nation.”

Papers also emphasised that community members are not alone.

“Ask for help. We have experienced and professional staff to assist.”
