Essence of Parktown Girls spirit and community is celebrated

This year, the Greenbadges weren't able to host the traditional Potted Sports day, but we certainly pulled off a Potted Sports Day unlike any other.

Covid-19 regulations led to the cancellation or adjustment of a few celebrations at Parktown High School for Girls. The school, which turned 97 at the beginning of September, had to cancel birthday celebrations and adjust their Potted Sports Day.

Chairperson of the Potted Sports Committee, Ammaarah Cachalia shared the report below:

There are certain things every Parktown girl looks forward to, certain rites of passage that serve as a testament to your journey at Parktown Girls. Hosting Potted Sports with your grade is certainly one of them. This year, the Greenbadges weren’t able to host the traditional Potted Sports day, but we certainly pulled off a Potted Sports Day unlike any other.

The theme for this year was ‘Herstory’, a three-part celebration that commemorates previous revolutionary women in history, current women who are challenging the systems, and the institution of Parktown herself – a 97-year-old home that has moulded the lives of so many who have walked her corridors. This theme is also an honouring to all the women who have been victims of gender-based violence, who have not been able to complete this story. ‘Herstory’ serves as an honour to these women.

On 4 September, we launched our Virtual Potted Sports Day. A website that displayed the true essence of both the Parktown spirit and community. It consists of over 50 years of previous Potted Sports Day memories, alongside our theme reveal, information about our charity, memories of our grade, and interviews with some admirable old girls.

This website wouldn’t have been possible without the help of many people. To the old girls, the broader school community, all the teachers, the Grade 11s of 2020, and teacher Halley. Thank you for all your effort and support.

Potted Sports Day this year may not have happened the way in which it usually does, but it was still an event that brought the school community together in a way that has never been done before, which is the most important part.

Here’s to our story, here’s to your story, here’s to ‘Herstory’.
