Pirates Cricket Club chairperson urges us to be positive

This cricket season was meant to start in October but Central Gauteng Lions told clubs that the leagues will only kick off in January next year.

Pirates Cricket Club chairperson Mlungisi Nkosi has encouraged the community to appreciate the gift of life in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.

This despite the last and next cricket seasons being shortened and leaving little to be excited about in the sport. Even the highest levels of the sport have not escaped the effect of the virus and a handful of men and women Proteas players have contracted Covid-19.

“We should try to stay positive and appreciate the gift of life irrespective of our religion,” said Nkosi.

“We should appreciate that we can wake up in the morning and have food on the table and that many of us have a job. You will realise there are people out there who are much worse off and be grateful for what you have.”

Cricket clubs saw last season cut a few weeks short and trophies handed out based on the state of the points table at the time of the season closure. This did not sit well with many Joburg clubs, but Pirates was content with a fifth-place finish in the top league, the Premier League, and a seventh place in the President’s League.

This cricket season was meant to start in October but Central Gauteng Lions told clubs that the leagues will only kick off in January next year.

Nkosi said he tries to focus on what can be done before then, and hopes training sessions can be held from October.

“That is how I keep myself positive, knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel and the further you go the light becomes brighter. We should not stay still and stagnate but keep moving until things are better,” the club chairperson concluded.
