SPCA celebrates a successful virtual Kilimanjaro Challenge

The SPCA community came out in its number from all across the globe to support the first-ever virtual Adventure Challenge.

The SPCA community came out in its number from all across the globe to support the first-ever virtual Adventure Challenge.

Formerly known as the SPCA Kilimanjaro Challenge, the annual fundraising initiative which was first started in 2012 could not go ahead as planned this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This however did not stop individuals from embracing the challenge and taking it to their neighbourhoods.

Just over 50 participants tried their best to recreate the challenge over five days, starting on 18 July. Participants had to complete 10 000 steps or cycle 10kms uphill each day to mimic the summit of the mountain.

“From Northcliff Hill and Table Mountain in South Africa to Canada and the Netherlands, we are extremely excited to have reached so many places,” said brand champion Zanri Marais.

Adventure Challenge organiser Stephanie Brown also participated by running up and down the sloping hills of Parkhurst for a total of 20 000 steps per day.  Through donations, the virtual challenge was able to raise an impressive R43 000 which has gone towards helping the Sandton SPCA look after the welfare of the animals.

Marais added that the team will soon will be adding a number of other fundraising initiatives to its events calendar, both local and international to help raise more money for the SPCA.”There are [also] still a few spots open for next year’s Kilimanjaro Challenge and we encourage anyone keen on our cause to get in touch,” she concluded.
