The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation invites you to a Joburg Street Art virtual tour

PARKTOWN –This weekend’s virtual tour by the foundation will criss-cross much of the city.

The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation invites residents to a Joburg Street Art virtual tour. The tour will take place on 18 July at 2.15 pm.

According to vice-chairperson at the foundation, Flo Bird, Johannesburg is home to a phenomenal collection of public art, including hundreds of individual pieces produced over the last 20 years by a flourishing City-led public art programme which is still going.

She continued, “As well as conventional monuments, the collection embraces counter-monuments exploring new critical modes of commemorative practice, while moving away from traditional monumentality.”

Bird said the tour will criss-cross much of the city, visiting a choice selection of sites which have added to the Johannesburg’s stock of heritage, and introducing some of the latest initiatives. Among the many highlights, the tour will visit two pieces which have recently been moved following security concerns, namely the Bezuidenhout Valley War Monument, and the much-loved Brenda Fassie statue.

She added that the tour will be led by Eric Itzkin, who is head of Heritage for the City of Johannesburg.  Itzkin will be joined by Pauline Borton, project manager for Trinity Session art company and Lavinia Williams-Otto, a heritage activist from Noordgesig.

Members of the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation pay only R40 to join each tour and this offer is extended to paid-up members of residents’ associations from Parkview, Westcliff, Forest Town, Parktown, Norwood and Orchards, Upper Houghton and Lower Houghton as these associations are all members of the JHF.

“These Tours are open to all who are interested – please note that space is limited. Non-members to pay R80 by Direct Deposit / EFT into the JHF Account. If you have registered and paid you will receive the link on 17 July. Please note that the tours begin promptly at 2.15 pm, so please sign in at least 15 minutes before the tour starts,” Bird said.
