Residents should take note of work on certain Greenside roads

GREENSIDE – These disruptions will be due to the Greenside Roads Upgrades Project.

For the next six months, Greenside residents and motorists can expect road disruptions. These disruptions will be due to the Greenside Roads Upgrades Project.

According to project community liaison officer, Dave Drinkwater, the objective of the project is to reduce the challenge experienced for on-street parking and creating a public space on Gleneagles Road. The idea is to formalise parking at Pirates Club for temporary and permanent parking for the staff of the businesses in the area.

“A tuk-tuk service managed by the business collective will operate between Pirates Club and the Gleneagles business area. The City of Joburg will not be responsible for the management of the tuk-tuk service but will only provide an enabling environment via its public environment upgrade infrastructure development,” Drinkwater explained.

He added that the civil engineer had outlined the identified routes affected by the project: these include Glenside, Gleneagles, Greenway, Cruden Bay and Greenfield roads.

Drinkwater warned that there would be permanent road closures on Glenside and Mowbray roads. He said the Mowbray Road closure was designed according to the application put forward by the Greenside Residents Association and subsequent recommendation by City of Joburg Development Planning, Johannesburg Roads Agency and Johannesburg Property Company, in 2016.

“The sidewalk upgrades are on both sides of the roads and the sidewalk width will remain the same except for the public square which will take space from the roads to consolidate the open spaces. Street furniture will be made available at the public square, with careful consideration not to create permanently habitable spaces,” Drinkwater explained.

He added that the scope of works included the installation of traffic signals at the tram-circle intersection, at Greenway and Gleneagles, as well as the Glenside and Greenfield intersection. The Pirates Club parking area will be upgraded and resurfaced to accommodate 88 parking bays and a tuk-tuk stop.

Some key changes that will take place:

  • Gleneagles Road will be adjusted to allow a dual-lane on the northern side of the road
  • The traffic circle and islands at Greenway and Gleneagles roads will be removed and the intersection controlled by traffic lights with new lanes
  • Glenside Road will be closed at Gleneagles
  • The sidewalk from the circle to the intersection of Barry Hertzog will be widened with pedestrian-friendly features
  • There will be raised pedestrian crossings at various points for safe pedestrian access
  • New road markings for additional traffic lanes and changed traffic flow
  • A new stormwater drain and pipe will be laid under Gleneagles Road

“Please be aware that there will be disruption to traffic flow and the road will be narrowed in places during construction with workmen and heavy machinery present at times. We would like to request the public to exercise extreme caution when travelling along the affected roads and to consider alternative routes during this project to minimise their inconvenience.”
