Berea’s needy residents get food supplies during lockdown

BEREA – The needy community are provided basic food necessities.

About 17 unemployed and needy people in Berea have been supported with basic food parcels to combat hunger during the national lockdown due to the coronavirus in South Africa.

According to DA’s proportional councillor in Ward 64 Joshua Apfel partnered with the shadow MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun for this initiative. The food parcel drive began on 6 April and they were still delivering parcels on 8 April.

Apfel added that 23 others stand to benefit as well.

He said the supplies were donated by various private companies and he, together with other community leaders in the ward, have identified the beneficiaries. The parcels contain necessities such as mealie meal and tinned food to ensure that those who are needy do not go to bed with a hungry stomach during the lockdown.

“We are working together with the [shadow] MMC as the one who actually managed to get the sponsors from private companies. We have also managed to get a private chicken supplier who has promised to sponsor us and we are expecting the chickens soon.”

Those in need in ward 73 also received food parcels. Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett said, “The councillors are packing food for people in need in Houghton organised by councillor Michael Sun, shadow MMC for Public Safety.”
