City Power said multiple cable faults led to the cycle of power outages in Illovo and surrounding areas

ILLOVO – A number of residents complained about recent and frequent power outages in their area during the lockdown.

Illovo residents have been experiencing a number of power outages during the lockdown. According to some posts by several residents on the, I LOVE ILLOVO Facebook page; the power outages have been going on for the past couple of weeks and about three times a day.

Resident Alexandre Fofossier posted on the page, “Could we have once for all an explanation of what is happening? Or a clear recovery plan for the area? Today we got out of power 4 times… (yes, the first was very short early morning) and we never get an explanation. No feedback from City Power or the ward councillor.”

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said they had multiple cable faults on a feeder supplying Illovo and the surrounding areas.

He further explained that this affected supply late on Monday from around 9pm. “Our technicians managed to fix it by Tuesday during the day. It then tripped again in the evening due to a faulty breaker on Inanda distributor at Cydna substation,” explained Mangena.

He said that however, that didn’t take long as the team managed to back feed on Tuesday night and restored power to the affected areas.

Mangena said, “We back-fed to enable us to fix the faulty breaker without cutting power to customers. We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this.”
