ICYMI: Rainbows projects adds colour to Covid-19 gloom

PARKVIEW – In an effort to lift up spirits during the Covid-19 outbreak, parents encouraged children to showcase their art skills with colours.

Mothers in the Parkview area decided to encourage children to bring some colour amid the Covid-19 gloom.

According to Parkview Residents Association member Carly Kelly, “Some of the mums in the area are running a really lovely campaign that involves children drawing a specific theme of pictures, currently rainbows, and putting them up on their walls.”

Founder of the campaign, Kelly Vorwerg said the idea grew from articles she had read on communities communicating through Coronavirus. “I created a ‘Rainbow’ group and sent a link on our community WhatsApp group, inviting mums who are keen to join the group. The response was phenomenal, in a few hours we had 80 people sign up to the WhatsApp group, not only mums and dads, we have some elderly who love the idea too.

“We’ve received such lovely messages from them saying how much they loved seeing the happy rainbows.”

She added that the theme for the first week was rainbows, the second week was handprints and in the recent week, they had the children make the South African flag with messages of hope.

Vorwerg added that during the first week and a half (before the lockdown) they were able to walk around which the children found amazing. They also received so many photos of children spotting the rainbows and hands.

“For the coming week – I’m hoping that we can join Reach for a Dream and send messages of hope to the children waiting for their dream. Such a beautiful initiative. Since lockdown, we’ve been posting the photos on the group and hopefully get lucky enough to see a few while doing a quick drive to the shop,” Vorwerg said.

She added that she hoped this carries on through lockdow., “I hope we can all have a party in the park when this trying time is over. The love on the group has certainly helped me!”
