Educational psychologist shares advice with parents during lockdown

PARKWOOD – Abelheim advises parents working from home to try working in shifts in order to spend time with their children.

Educational psychologist at Family Life Centre Claudia Abelheim says parents need to be available to their children during lockdown.

“Whether it’s spending time with them playing, or listening to the things that are making them scared. As hard as it is, parents need to be able to hold their children’s stress and anxiety for them. Be extra loving and caring and give extra hugs and kisses,” said Abelheim.

She said that while there needs to be a bit of flexibility around the rules and norms in the house, it is important to keep structure and routine in place.

She advised parents working from home to try working in shifts so that one parent can work while the other looks after the children. With older children, families can schedule ‘work time’ where everyone sits and does their own work.

“Children become bored at the best of times,” said Abelheim. While younger children are going to get bored quickly at home doing the same thing every day, it is advisable for those with gardens or living in a complex to take younger children outside.

“Older children, especially teenagers, are going to struggle with the loss of contact with their peer group. The last thing teenagers want is to be stuck at home with their parents.”

Abelheim encouraged parents to educate themselves as much as possible about how the virus spreads and institute strict rules about handwashing and social distancing, but there is no need to stop children from playing outside and getting dirty.

“As important as it is for parents to give their children extra care, they must ensure that they give themselves extra care too.”

“Make time for each other, have date night at home when the kids are sleeping, and turn off the news.”
