Rape suspect arrested for assaulting girlfriend with a steel pipe in Newtown

NEWTOWN – The suspect is expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.

A 3o-year-old suspect was arrested on the corner of Carr and Henry Nxumalo streets in Newtown on 20 March for allegedly raping and assaulting his girlfriend with a steel pipe.

The incident allegedly occurred on 8 March. The spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele said, ” [The] victim was accused of having an affair with another man. She was assaulted with a steel pipe before it was inserted in her private parts. Neighbours called for an ambulance. She was in hospital until she was discharged on 19 March. ”

According to Mbele, the victim went back to her place where she was raped again by her boyfriend. She went to the police station and opened a case, and officers traced the suspect and arrested him.

Police were still investigating and the suspect will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
