Orchards to host week-long inaugural Art Clinic Festival

ORCHARDS – The festival is aimed at activating and enticing conversation about our neighbourhoods.

Residents in the Johannesburg north-eastern suburbs will be treated to a first-ever week-long Art Clinic Festival in May at The Orchards Project in Orchards.

The festival, which is empowered by The Trinity Session, will take place from 4 to 10 May with various locals and other artists descending in the area to share the spotlight. The festival is not only for art performers but it is also open to all who wish to attend and share their views about their neighbourhood.

According to a senior project manager for The Trinity Session, Pauline Borton, various creatives and ordinary people from all walks of life are expected to participate. “This will be different because it is not all about performing artists only but also creatives from industries and ordinary people in the communities sharing their stories,” explained Borton.

The festival is aimed at activating and enticing conversation about our neighbourhoods and how they operate. “The idea was born from the famous #ArtMyJozi by JDA [Johannesburg Development Agency] and it enables all including the locals to express themselves about their neighbourhood in an artistic fashion. It’s more of knowledge gathering and sharing.”

Ward 74 councillor David Fisher has endorsed the idea. The aim of the festival is to improve the social cohesion and fabric of our fragile society.

Borton said they are still busy with the groundwork in terms of defining the programme that will last throughout the week. He added that they are looking at various types of events that will be infused into their programme. “Through a series of curated walking tours and outdoor events, local residents, businesses and the public at large will be encouraged to celebrate and share their particular interest, talent and passion.

“This is an exploration project and a first that we will be launching in the area.”
