Union of Jewish Women empowers unemployed women with skills

HOUGHTON – Graduates are able to open their own businesses to make a decent living.

The Union of Jewish Women (UJW) is inviting unemployed members of the community to join their sewing school and gain adequate skills to enable themselves a decent income.

According to the union’s executive director, Cindy Kree, some of their previous graduates have been successful in finding jobs and self-employment in the community.

During the December holidays, Kree said 12 women who were part of their four-month-long programme, graduated and were issued certificates.

With the year just starting, she said they were recruiting and the union was calling unemployed people, both men and women, to register for the programme.

“The programme is starting on 27 January and we call on interested people to register and enable them this great opportunity,” she said.

“We have two groups during the year and we are starting with the first one later in January and the next group will start as soon as the first group finishes later in the year.”

People learn to do various sewing work including making table cloths, clothes, aprons, teddy bears as well as other exciting stuff.

The sewing school was initially started in 2014 with the help of various donors to ensure its success.

Interested people can contact the UJW office for more information on 011 648 1053.
