Bramley Police Station partners with Joburg schools to curb crime in the area

In its quest for safer schools and community involvement in the fight against crime, the local police station, in partnership with nine local schools, have embarked on a programme called Adopt A Cop.

The initiative, which is a brainchild of the Bramley Police Station management and various local schools principals, was recently launched by the station commander, Owen King at Sandton View High School.

Station spokesperson Captain Mogodi said the initiative is aimed at creating awareness for safer schools and learning environments as well as to improve the working relationship between the station and schools. “We have partnered with nine local schools in our area in our efforts to curb crime in the schools. The schools that we’ve partnered with are East Ridge High School, Bramley Primary School, Summit College, Sandton View, Gresswold Primary School, Liberty Community School, Fairways Primary School, Hyde Park High and Marlboro Combined School.”

He said the initiative will see one officer from the station assigned to one of the nine adopted schools which he or she will work with to raise crime awareness, get reports from the principal and lead unannounced stop-and-searches at the school.

“We will host different kinds of activities with the schools through the help of champion officers with the aim of educating learners about the dangers and consequences of drugs and substance abuse,” Mogodi said the initiative was an ongoing project that the station and schools agreed to embark on throughout the year.
