Highlands North Boys’ old boys plough back to their school

HIGHLANDS NORTH – The roof has been damaged causing leakages and seriously damaging a ceiling in the classrooms.

Highlands North Boys’ High School‘s roof is getting a major revamp with old boys of the school undertaking serious maintenance work to prevent leakages.

Over the past weekend, through their Old Boys Club which is part of their Highlands North Boys’ Foundation, the former learners started repairing parts of a block of classrooms which has been badly damaged.

According to one of the old boys and now chairperson of the school governing body, Riccardo Houghton the project is being led by one of their members who have construction skills.

“The roof is seriously damaged as it has been ‘split’ resulting in water from the rain damaging the ceiling of about five classrooms which have been leaking very badly,” said Houghton.

“The guys are doing a repair job to ensure that there are no leaks when it rains. We expect them to finish work during the month of February and then will decide on another project.”

Houghton added that they were considering starting with a borehole project to help the school reduce costs on municipal rates and taxes.

Through this particular project, he said they would enable the school to save on water costs as they did recently with electricity.

“Just late last year, the guys replaced all the lights with new power-saving LED lights so that the school can save money. We will then go on again to restore other major facilities including the school’s swimming pool which has not been working for a while now.”

Houghton said they were financing these projects through the Old Boys Club whose members contribute R100 every month towards these goals.

He encouraged other former learners from the school to join the club and give back.

To further raise funds for the school he said they would host fundraising events in a bid to get the school back to its former glory.
