Bogus car guard held for theft out-of-motor vehicle in Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG – Runner's car broken into and stuff stolen but recovered.

A 32-year-old Johannesburg man was arrested by the police after he had allegedly stolen valuables from a car.

According to the Johannesburg Central Police Station’s spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, the incident occurred on 24 September on the corner of Jeppe and Henry Nxumalo streets.

Mbele reported that the victim, an FNB Run Your City Race participant, had parked his Mazda 3 while the suspect, who had apparently posed as a car guard, promised to look after it.

“The victim, a 28-year-old male parked his car and this man who was a bogus car guard wearing a reflector jacket, promised to look after his car,” said Mbele.

“Police who were doing crime prevention saw the suspect busy taking something from the car and when he saw police tried to run but was apprehended. Police recovered a camera and clothes of the victim.”

Police also recovered three jamming devices in possession of the suspect, added Mbele.

An investigation is still underway and the suspect will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

Police advised drivers to ensure that after they had locked their vehicle with a central lock key, they should further check their doors physically to ensure they were locked before leaving their cars.
