Man held for hijacking

JOHANNESBURG – The suspects ran way but community members gave chase and finally apprehended him.

Johannesburg police are on the hunt for two men who allegedly attempted to hijack a man in the CBD on 21 September.

According to the police, one hijacker was arrested and his two accomplices are still on the run.

Captain Xoli Mbele explained that a 28-year-old motorist was stationary at the intersection of Pixley Ka Isaka Seme and Pritchard streets when the three men attempted to hijack his car.

“The victim was with his girlfriend stationary at a red robot and window slightly opened,” said Mbele.

“Three males approached him and two had firearms. They pointed the firearms at him and instructed him to get out of the car but he drove off at high speed skipping a red robot and collided with a blue Toyota Hi-Ace taxi.”

The suspects ran way but community members gave chase and finally apprehended the one suspect. His accomplices were in possession of the two firearms. The suspect sustained minor injuries after he was apparently assaulted by the community before the police came to his rescue.

A police investigation is underway and the suspect will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
