Johannesburg taxi driver arrested for attempted murder

JOHANNESBURG – The taxi driver was using his licensed firearm and it was confiscated.

A bystander was fatally wounded when a taxi driver and a motorist were involved in a scuffle on the corner of Kerk and Troye streets in the Johannesburg CBD on 16 August.

According to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele, a 34-year-old male was apparently driving slowly, in search of a parking space when a taxi driver that was following him started to hoot and shout at him.

He added that the 34-year old- man allegedly jumped out of his vehicle to explain to the taxi driver that he is looking for parking. “The 39-year-old taxi driver pulled out a gun and fired a shot towards the other driver,” said Mbele.

“The driver pushed his hand and the bullet hit the bystander. At that time, the police, who were busy with their routine crime prevention activities, heard the gunshot and went towards that direction and found two people fighting for a firearm and told them to put it down.”

Police established that the taxi driver’s firearm was licensed, and it was confiscated.

“The victim who was accidentally shot was taken to hospital by an ambulance where he was treated and discharged.”

A police investigation is still underway and the suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
