Men arrested by Johannesburg police

JOHANNESBURG – An investigation is underway after police arrested two suspects for kidnapping, robbery and malicious damage to property.

Police arrested two men said to be working for an unnamed taxi association on charges of kidnapping, robbery and malicious damage to property.

The suspects, aged 35 and 56, were arrested in Brixton after they allegedly robbed a 34-year-old taxi driver after the driver dropped off a passenger on the corner of Bree and Burgersdorp streets on 7 August.

According to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Xoli Mbele, the victim was approached by the suspects who allegedly accused him of picking up a passenger in the wrong place.

“They switched off the ignition and took the car keys. They assaulted him, took R195, damaged his cell phone, forced him in a white Toyota Etios and took him to their offices,” he said.

“The victim came to the police station to open a case after [the suspects] had let him go. The police drove around tracing the wanted suspects with the complainant inside the police car and found the car used in the commission of a crime with four occupants inside. The victim managed to point out the two suspects who robbed him.”

According to Mbele, three other suspects are still large. “The victim reported that there were five people initially who robbed him.”

An investigation is underway and the suspects will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
