Raedene-based South African Friends of Israel blanket drive warms up Jozi

RAEDENE – Blankets for Hope warms up Jozi's vulnerable residents.

In the winter months, there are so many residents Johannesburg who are in desperate need of blankets to keep themselves warm from the harsh elements during the cold spells.

In partnership with the Jewish community, the Raedene-based South African Friends of Israel has been handing out hot soup an bread rolls to those in need, and so far more than 3 000 blankets have been donated and were distributed through churches to various communities in the city.

In the spirit of the Jewish concept of tikkun olam, which means repair of the world, the first distribution took place with the assistance of Pastor Errol Jacobs and the paramount chief of the Gonaqua tribe of the Khoisan in Eldorado Park, Cornelius Botha.

Jacobs thanked the Jewish community and the Israeli representatives for their generosity and partnership, stating that often their community felt ‘forgotten’, and that this was a welcome gift to warm their hearts.

The beneficiaries of these blankets, known as the Blankets for Hope, were the homeless and destitute, and included families and elderly residents of Eldorado Park whom were in dire need of winter blankets.

This was the first stop for the Blankets for Hope drive for South African Friends of Israel, with the aim of continuing to bring hope and joy to those less fortunate communities.

The next stop was the Jozi CBD.
