Houghton heritage to be discussed in an informative talk at Killarney Country Club

HOUGHTON – Houghton residents are welcome to join the talk by Kathy Munro discussing the heritage of Houghton.

Houghton residents who desire to learn more about the history of their suburb are encouraged to attend a talk by Professor Kathy Munro, vice chair of the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation (JHF) on 27 March.

The talk, which will take place at the Killarney Country Club at 7.30pm, will discuss what constitutes a heritage house, which houses warrant a blue plaque and who is responsible for preserving the heritage of Houghton.

The informative discussion comes in the wake of new City policies of densification which trend toward smaller, secure multi-dwelling complexes which Munro believes will bring Houghton’s heritage under threat.

“Property developers and owners have seen opportunities in the subdivision of large acre stands and opt for the sale and redevelopment of properties allowing old homes (often designed by significant Johannesburg architects) to be demolished and land to be recycled for newer homes of all types,” said Munro.

“Anyone who is interested in the history of the suburb and its challenges and opportunities is welcome to attend. We will also discuss whether the demolition of houses is something that we are willing to accept,” she added.

The foundation is a voluntary non-governmental organisation which works to identify and protect Johannesburg heritage. The role of the upper and lower Houghton residents associations in joining the foundation will also be discussed.

The event is free for members of the Lower Houghton Ratepayers Association and is R50 for non-members. Residents are encouraged to RSVP to admin@lhra.joburg to confirm their attendance.
