Security industry sickened by brutal killings of colleagues

HILLBROW – The security company is offering counselling services to the families of the deceased and are also assisting with the funeral arrangements.


National Security and Fire Management Company have expressed shock after their two security guards stationed in Hillbrow were gunned down.

The two security guards – Bhekumzi Luxon Mzolo, a responding supervisor, and Joseph Skhosana, a response officer – from the Johannesburg north branch were shot and killed on the corner of Claim and Caroline streets on 10 February in full view of bystanders, as reported by North Eastern Tribune in the online article Watch: Manhunt launched for suspects who shot and killed two security guards in Hillbrow on 12 February.

The motive of the murder still remains unknown, however, a robbery has not been ruled out. The suspects are said to have taken a service pistol.

The incident, which was recorded in a CCTV camera, was widely condemned and the security industry who are working with the police in their manhunt for the suspects.

Shortly after the incident, Gauteng Community Safety MEC, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane called on the police to leave no stone unturned and ensure that the senseless onslaught of security officers in Gauteng is put to a complete stop.

The police reported that two suspects have been arrested and three others are still wanted. Nkosi-Malobane applauded the swift arrest, “This is the type of swift response we need from our law enforcement agencies to deal with criminality in the province.”

Wendy Janse van Rensburg, the spokesperson for National Security and Fire Management and inland executive, said the security industry, as well as the families of both the security guards, are devastated by the loss of their loved ones. She said the deceased’s colleagues are shocked and sickened by the brutal violence and senseless killing of their colleagues.

“At National Security and Fire Management we are a family and losing these two brothers has devastated this team,” Janse van Rensburg said.

“The industry as a whole has sent support and condolences – we all face the same risk and stand together in tragic times.

“We are actively working with the SAPS, have made tracking reports and reviewed CCTV footage with them. We will work closely with the SAPS as possible to ensure that [all] the men responsible for this brutal crime are brought to justice.”

National management is in constant contact with the family of the guards and Janse van Rensburg said they are assisting them with death benefit claims. She added that they have offered counselling services and are assisting the families with funeral arrangements.

A memorial service was held on 21 February at NG Gemeente Wilgespruit, 1 Wag-‘N-Bietjie Street, Wilro Park from 10am to 12noon.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Captain Mavela Masondo said any member of the public who might have witnessed this incident or who can provide information is urged to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Mthanjwa or Hillbrow Poice Station on 011 488 6517.
