Norwood Primary School hosts fun walk for foundation phase

NORWOOD – There will definitely be more fun walks with the next one to be held in June.

About 340 learners at Norwood Primary School took part in their first quarterly fun walk this year with an aim to raise the school’s pride.

This according to the head of department Salosh Thangavalu, who added that the reception class, grades 1, 2, and 3 all took part.

The fun walk was introduced to the foundation phase in January last year and happens on a termly basis.

The purpose is to build school spirit, increase participation, and raise school pride.

One of the most important aspects of the fun walk is to encourage and improve the overall health of the children, Thangavalu said. “The fun walk is a big part of learning for the little ones and we aim to improve and promote a positive attitude towards a healthy and happy lifestyle.

“At Norwood Primary School we take great pride in sport and always encourage and support physical development especially in young children, besides the fun walk, we also had an athletics day, which was this term.”

During this event, she said the foundation phase children participated in relays and flat races.

Coming up soon in term two the school will host mini netball and soccer and the Grade 2s are currently playing mini cricket and this will continue throughout the year.

Thangavalu said even though the parents are not directly involved in the sporting events at school, they are always behind the scenes. “They always encourage the participation of their children by ensuring that their children are suitably dressed for all our events.

“We aim to strengthen ties with our parents from term two, so yes, our parents will definitely be involved in our fun walks and sport days here at Norwood Primary School.”

The next event at Norwood Primary School will be the Dress up Book Day which is taking place on 5 March.

This event promotes and encourages reading in the foundation phase and Thangavalu said each child will have to read a story, dress up as their favourite character from the story that he/she has read and do a small presentation to the class about the story.
