New Newtown festival to appease fans

NEWTOWN – This is a unique and eclectic musical programme that fuses world beats, pop, rock, soul and electronica.

Music, theatre and delicious food lovers can expect a fun-filled experience as Newtown is set to play host to a global street festival.

According to the organisers, there will be three stages, four festival clubs, a food and wine theatre, a global cinema, one theatre production and various art exhibitions from 13 to 14 October.

The #District Global Street Festival is organised by Magnum Events International with festival director Leone Amon, and international programme director Jody Ackland, partnering together to ensure successful festivities.

This urban-based festival aims to create a platform that cultivates symbiosis of various cultures, backgrounds and demographics in a clean, safe and inclusive environment.

Amon said they will be closing the streets and swinging open all the doors of Newtown with a rich entertainment programme over two days. “We have a jam-packed day filled with music from all over the world.

“There will be arts, performances, theatre and the latest Indie films at the cinema. There will be a number of top-up stations throughout the festival.”

A festival ticket cost R200 for one day and R400 for two days and it will allow guests access to all the stages, the cinema, the theatre and the festival clubs.

According to the festival director, this is a unique and eclectic musical programme that fuses world beats, pop, rock, soul and electronica whilst showcasing both international, locally established and upcoming artists to an audience keen to explore musical adventures with like-minded people.

On Saturday, the festival will showcase a powerhouse of female artists including Flavia Coelho from Rio de Janeiro’s Favela ‘morros’ and The Dhoad Gypsies of Rajasthan, the cultural ambassadors for Rajasthan. Then on Sunday, Amon added, they will welcome Kíla, heralded as Ireland’s most innovative and iconic bands.

“#District is like loads of different festivals converging on the same urban landscape for one weekend, each area of the festival has its own character, its own loyal fans and its own special attractions.

“We want to rebrand Newtown as a safe place to work and play through a five-year strategy of which milestone one is a public perception with a strong focus on safety and security.”

The festival is open to everyone and the theme for this year’s music is – The Female/The Woman.
