Notorious ‘Rolex gang’ strikes again in Melrose North

MELROSE NORTH – Police suspect that the victim was followed from the mall before the robbers struck in his driveway.

Norwood police are investigating a case of a robbery that took place in Melrose North and the infamous Rolex gang is suspected to be behind the robbery.

According to the police, the victim was robbed of his expensive Rolex watch in his driveway after returning from a mall.

The spokesperson for the Norwood Police Station, Captain Elliot Tshivhase, said the victim was apparently followed from Rosebank Mall after having lunch. “He had just parked his vehicle in his driveway when two armed men approached and threatened him with firearms and took his watch and cell phone,” said Tshivhase.

“We suspect that they followed him from the mall because they didn’t want anything besides the Rolex watch but also took his cell phone in the process.”

Tshivhase reported that the two suspects were driving a silver Polo and police are following up on the matter. “We are still investigating the matter and no arrest has been made yet but police have launched a manhunt,” he said.

This is the second incident in the Johannesburg north-eastern suburb where a man was robbed of a Rolex. In the first incident, as reported on the North Eastern Tribune, Week ending 23 March, a man was robbed of his Rolex worth about R554 000 at Norwood Mall. It was reported that the victim had just parked his vehicle outside Builders Warehouse when two men pounced on him and robbed him. Tshivhase said, “We have not yet arrested any suspect for this particular robbery but the investigation is ongoing.”
