Dog attacks on Pikitup staff ‘affecting service delivery’

JOBURG – The City has expressed its concern for the recent increase in dog attacks on Pikitup employees.

The City of Johannesburg is appealing to residents to keep their dogs inside their properties when the Pikitup truck comes along. This after reports of dog attacks on a daily basis have come to light.

Pikitup’s general manager Peter Hlubi said employees working in the south of Joburg have raised this as a serious concern in a recent operational meeting. He said the workers complained during the meeting that in some areas they were not able to efficiently deliver services due to the constant threats of being bitten by dogs.

He said, however, the problem exists in all regions.

“We are appealing to residents, particularly those in the aforementioned regions [D and G] to restrain their dogs by ensuring that they are kept within their yards. We are fortunate that at this stage there have not been incidents of dog bite-related infections reported as yet,” he said.

The City also reminded residents of the cats and dogs by-laws of the City. The by-law says that no person may permit any dog to be in a public place unless it is kept on a leash and under control of a person.

Failure to comply with the provisions of the by-laws will result in fines or a prison term, the City said.
