25-year-old suspect arrested for illegal possession of gun in CBD

JOHANNESBURG – The recovered firearm belonged to an officer who had been robbed earlier in the year.

A 25-year old male suspect was arrested on 12 April by the Johannesburg Central police for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

According to the spokesperson for Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele, the suspect was arrested at the MOTH building on the corner of Remembrance and Loveday streets during a police operation. “The police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties, searching the building.

“In one of the rooms they found a male and when they searched him the police discovered a firearm in his possession,” alleged Mbele.

Preliminary investigations revealed that it is a police firearm which Mbele said was stolen from a police officer on the corner Jeppe and Rissik streets on 7 January. According to Mbele, the officer was stationary at a red traffic light when three male suspects pointed firearms at him.

“They took his firearm and a cell phone before they fled the scene,” he said.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
