Orange Grove Samaritans supply needy people with food

ORANGE GROVE – 'They serve us healthy, neat and fresh food and not just leftovers.'

Two restaurant owners have come together to support unemployed people and feed them healthy food every Wednesday in Orange Grove and in Norwood.

The idea came into effect in February last year with about 60 plates given to people who are looking for temporary and permanent jobs on the corners of Louis Street in Orange Grove next to the Pick n Pay store as well as on Grant Street in Norwood at the circle. Among them are painters, plumbers and tree fellers.

The two owners, Vicky Seboyane and Anthony Sacks, said this initiative is to ensure that these people do not go hungry when they are looking for employment.

Seboyane owns Vicky’s Restaurant along Louis Botha Avenue in Orange Grove and Sacks owns the Next Door Restaurant in Norwood.

Seboyane said she was first approached by Sacks who saw a need for this kind of initiative to assist where he can as a fellow local businessman. “When we started we only gave out 60 full meal plates and now we have increased the number to 100, but it is still not enough.

“We have been serving them pap, meat and vegetables every Wednesday since last year February. This shows that as business people we don’t only focus on making money but also on supporting needy people in our areas of business.

“We also continued with our initiative during the festive season to ensure that these people also share in the fun of the holidays.”

One of the beneficiaries and a local resident, Pride Dube, said,”We’re very grateful and they don’t only do it for the few of us who are here looking for employment but for the entire community.

“We’re grateful also because they serve us healthy, neat and fresh food and not just leftovers.”
