Norwood police warn residents about buying stolen goods

NORWOOD – Residents who report that their valuables are stolen must also produce their serial numbers.

Norwood police are warning residents to refrain from buying stolen goods or they will face arrests.

Spokesperson for Norwood Police Station, Captain Elliot Tshivhase said residents who buy stolen goods from criminals also contribute to criminal activity.

“We want to encourage people not to buy stolen goods because they will also face the full might of the law,” said Tshivhase.

“By simply buying the goods you automatically become an accomplice to the crime and you will be arrested and charged. When you buy from someone you need to request the receipt of the valuables that you are buying.”

Police are also encouraging people to record the serial numbers of their valuables so that even if it is stolen it becomes easy to recover them.

Properties such as laptops, TVs, cellphones, watches and other similar valuables. Their serial numbers need to be recorded and stored in a safe place.

Tshivhase said this applies to both new and secondhand goods.

“There are many people who come to the station and report that they have been robbed or their valuables were stolen. So when you have the serial numbers and the police happen to arrest a suspect and confiscate goods, they are able to know exactly who the valuables belong to.”

Tshivhase said crime is rife and urged the residents to work with the police in their quest to rid the area of crime.
