Councillor urges party organisers to comply with JOC regulations

Organisers should consult with the Joint Operations Committees to host an event

Residents are urged to comply with the City of Joburg’s bylaws when planning an event, or they will be prohibited from doing so.

This is according to Ward 81 councillor, Irene Rugheimer following a party that was prohibited from taking place on 30 June because of non-compliance.

Rugheimer said should anyone wish to arrange an event in a public place or at home, they need to adhere to Joint Operations Committee’s regulations. She said organisers need to consult with the committee which was established by the City to ensure that all events are safe and comply with all the bylaws and regulations.

The committee comprises of event management, disaster management, City Parks, City Power, Emergency Management Services, environmental health, Joburg Development Agency, Joburg Water, Joburg Roads Agency, Pikitup and the police.

A party, held in Lombardy East, was forbidden from taking place on 30 June and the councillor said it is because none of the entities were informed and thus it was prohibited.

“This party, which has been held on Heine Road for the past two years, was not stopped before, even though residents had complained about the noise and the parking of vehicles on the roadway.

“The party was then prohibited last weekend due to the fact that they did not comply with the bylaws of the council,” she said.

Ahead of this event taking place, residents alerted Rugheimer that the event was being advertised on [social] media and they requested her intervention.

The councillor then phoned the number supplied in the advertisement and was told this is a birthday party. Rugheimer said nonetheless they had not complied and the event had to be prohibited.

For an event to be safe, she said the organisers need follow certain procedures through the City’s Joint Operations Committee and further supplied a link with a checklist containing all the details on how to go about complying.
