#ICYMI: New Ward 73 councillor outlines her vision for Norwood, Houghton and Orange Grove

NORWOOD –Ward 73 councillor gives the lowdown on her ward.

Ward 73 councillor, Eleanor Huggett, who has been in office for more than two months, said much still needs to be done to improve the conditions faced by the residents in her area.

The ward includes Norwood, Houghton and Orange Grove among other areas and Huggett said she is doing her best to ensure prosperity within the ward.

The new Democratic Alliance councillor, who was recently elected to office following the bi-elections, said she is working together with the residents, the police, associations and other spheres of the community to deal with concerning issues.

She said the taxes and rates, crime and other construction developments are the major issues facing residents in her ward.

“The greatest challenge would unquestionably be the billing crisis. We have some residents who have had contractors at their doorsteps wanting to cut off their municipal supply even though they had paid their bills,” said Huggett.

With regards to crime, the councillor said she regularly attends the community policing forum meetings and said she is learning a great deal from the residents who attend.

She said their questions and concerns are valid and worrying adding that crime and violence do not seem to be abating.

Until our police forces are at full capacity, residents are doing everything they can at a private level to ensure their safety.

“At a ward level, Metro police have been very quick whenever I call them and have been a great support and I am very grateful to them, in particular the acting superintendent, Alfred Lemao and acting inspector, William Moshobane.”

She, however, said they have to be contacted in order to offer and give assistance, and encouraged residents to do this at any time.

Huggett said there are several new projects on the go in the ward. “Roads are being resurfaced, Paterson Park is being developed and Norwood Park is also being upgraded to mention a few.”

Louis Botha Avenue continues to be a challenge with the building and development continuing.

She said Metro police are already in action dealing with bylaw infractions and will need everyone’s support and perseverance to make Louis Botha Avenue and its surrounds the safe and attractive place it is planned to be.
