The community is invited to the Norwood Community Police Forum meeting

ORANGE GROVE – The Norwood Community Police Forum meeting will be about educating the community and the police about the forum's role.

The Norwood Community Police Forum (CPF) monthly meeting will be held on 1 March at The Venue in Melrose Arch at 6pm.

The meeting will be about educating the community and the police about the forum’s role.

Chairperson of the forum, Wandile Yani said, “It’s about changing people’s mindsets. The community has changed a lot and we have to learn to all work together.

“The biggest challenge is overcoming the drugs and illegal brothels [in the area] –6th Avenue in Orange Grove is a drug haven for criminals and we are seeing a lot of illegal outlets selling alcohol.

“We urge members of the public to report any wrongdoings. We urge for vigilance, however, please do not put your lives at risk. If you are not comfortable speaking with the police, you can use the toll-free crime line or speak with the CPF, which is one of the best platforms for management and mediation.”

The forum has invited members of the police, courts and the Liquor Board to discuss crime matters at the meeting. An outreach programme will be launched next month whereby different areas in the community will be visited by members of the forum to discuss any concerns residents may have.

“Changes are already starting to happen and I want to give a big thanks to the many organisations helping our commitment to change,” said Yani.

He added that there had been a real positivity at Norwood Police Station since the arrival of Colonel Pinkie Jojisa, the new station commander. “[Metro police] and security companies such as ADT and CAP have been paramount in their efforts to combat crime. The Norwood business forum has gone beyond the call of duty, and Spar in Grant Avenue, and Pick n Pay on Louis Botha have been very generous with donations and hard work when providing for events.”

He said the forum meeting would be an opportunity for residents and members to voice their concerns and look to the future.

“It’s about the community, the police and CPF all working together for a harmonious and crime-free Johannesburg. This will only be achieved if we can all work together, and I am hopeful to see large numbers attending our event and start making a change.”
