André’s Taekwondo Academy wins big at SA National Taekwondo Championships

The South African National Taekwondo Championships competition saw several students from the Norwood-based André’s Taekwondo Academy compete in the top five.

André van Tonder, owner of the academy, said the competition, which took place in Secunda, saw talented students from his academy bring back 60 medals from the championships.

The following students were crowned champions:

• André van Tonder (chief instructor) – national champ for weapon, and placed second for form, combat weapons and sparring
• Marissa Katz (senior instructor) – national champ for weapons and placed second for form and combat weapon
• Jason du Toit – national champ for form, weapons and sparring
• Gavin Rayd – national champ for combat weapons and placed second for weapons and sparring
• Gabriel Diamond – placed second for weapons, third for form and third for sparring
• Darren Gommer – placed fourth for weapons.

“The SA champs was a great end to a very successful year and an even better start to the next year,” said Van Tonder.
