Corlett park clean–up campaign

JOBURG – Residents urged to take responsibility of their parks

City Parks, in partnership with Metro police and City council, recently had a successful clean-up campaign at Corlett Park situated on the corner of Scott Street and Corlett Drive.

Raymond Makananise of City Parks said that in many towns and cities, parks are suffering in the current recession.

“Despite good intentions, the assigned personnel may not be able to keep up with required maintenance. Drought, vandalism, graffiti, invasive species, wildfires and random dumping all take a toll,” Makananise said.

He said they have 16 parks to maintain in the region and sometimes it is difficult as they do not have enough resources.

Many of the community parks in the northern suburbs have been turned into dumping sites and it costs a fortune for the City of Johannesburg to have the parks cleared.

Ward 74 councillor Dave Fisher, who was also present during the clean-up, urged residents to be responsible and to take good care of the parks.

Fisher also thanked City Parks and Metro police for their continued support in helping improve the standards of the local parks.
