Class of ’66 reunites for generous handover at Orange Grove

ORANGE GROVE – Alumni descend on Orange Grove for 50th reunion and handover.

The Class of ’66 gathered at Orange Grove Primary School for a trip down memory lane with a 50th reunion and handover at the school.

The special visit took place on 8 October and saw 15 former pupils of the school handover more than R100 000 worth of gifts and money and reminisce on their time at the school.

An excited Alys Chatzkel, a member of the Class of ’66 committee, explained the importance of hosting the reunion and handover at the school.

“In deciding to come together for this, we saw the need to make a difference at our former school and bridge the education gap,” she said. “Hopefully, in doing this, it’ll spur other alumni from other years to come on board and contribute something to this historical school.”

Echoing these sentiments was Tarishma Seegobin, deputy principal of the school, who received the generous donation on behalf of the school and explained the dire need for donated goods.

“We were initially approached with the idea of the reunion and handover and informed them of some of our needs as a school, but we did not expect such a generous donation from them,” Seegobin said.

Some of the items donated included school supplies, costumes for the arts and culture classes, books for the library, blinds for the school hall as well as carpets for five classrooms.

A happy Seegobin thanked the alumni for the donation. “Orange Grove is a very old school with limited resources, but our teachers always try their best and we appreciate any assistance in helping them achieve this,” she said.

The special reunion was followed by a get-together at the Living Room in Maboneng.
