Lambton Scouts makes a difference at Uitkoms Home for Girls

JOBURG – Scouts get stuck in at home for girls to set an example for other teenagers.

The Lambton Scouts decided to do some wonderful work for Uitkoms Home for Girls in Observatory as part of their 40 hours of community service.

When the Scouts visited the home to look at possible tasks they could assist with, the home’s Tammi Botes suggested they clean out and replant the garden and repair and paint the current garden furniture which needed a facelift.

Founded in 1994, Uitkoms Home for Girls is a registered child and youth care centre in Observatory which helps a number of girls who are victims of rape, abuse, abandonment, neglect and some who are pregnant.

The home offers shelter, protection, professional counselling and life guidance to teenage girls from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them to reclaim their dignity and to build bright futures.

This being a team effort, the group of Scouts came in teams on various days to tackle the list of jobs compiled for them.

The majority of them worked on Saturdays and school holidays, which said a lot about these teens’ commitment to their community and to making a difference.

They also took on some additional tasks which included sorting and cleaning out the home’s garage, complete restoration of all garden furniture at the home, restoration and painting of metal gates and gutters as well as weeding and replanting a portion of the garden.

The Lambton Scouts, a movement embracing change for the good of all youth, also donated some beautiful pallet benches which they had made themselves.

“You are an example to the girls at the home and to all teenagers out there. With the type of values you exhibit, you will make fine adults,” said Lauren Da Rocha, business development officer at Uitkoms Home for Girls.
